Positive Mindset
It seems to me that having a positive mindset is one of the best things we can do for ourselves at midlife. It may seem like something you heard in Psychology 101, but the way you think about what is happening to you directly impacts the way you behave, and often what happens to you. If you have done any searches around midlife, you will have found lots of results about a midlife crisis and the negative mindset people have adopted.
If you think about any new experience you may have had, a great deal of the way you thought about it came from the way you were told about it. If the person was upbeat and enthusiastic, you probably got excited about the new idea, and almost certainly had a great time. If on the other hand, the person told you the new experience was going to be boring or a waste of time, if you still had to go through with the activity, it probably met your expectations and wasn’t very exciting.
Overall it seems as though being optimistic about life, and acting on your positive mindset is a good thing. This study found that optimists even live longer!
It seems as though the bottom line is that sometimes we have to spend time just changing the way we think and getting into a more positive frame of mind. While we all reassess what we’ve done with our lives from time to time, what we choose to do with the future, and whether we choose to adopt a positive mindset entirely up to us. You already know that you can change little in life beyond your attitude, and midlife is no exception!
